Double Weekly Recap

Holy life, Batman.

Spring break, thank you world.

I didn’t get a single post up last week. Life just laid into me. Exhaustion hit me like a ton of bricks and there was more than one night where I was in bed shortly after 8pm. Ellie is going through a bit of a four month sleep regression and work destroyed me. Destroyed me. So busy, so stressed.

When I taught in the inner city I’m pretty sure I cried every single day. In my current district I’m much happier and it’s rare when I break down. But this week nearly did me in and by Thursday I was done. Commence meltdown. School has me in a serious ball of stress right now. It’s really unfortunate.

On top of that I was also sick last week. I had something gnarly with my sinuses which lead to a sore throat and some laryngitis.

I’m so happy to be on break this week, but I know what stressors lie in wait for me when I get back to work next week. June 24th can’t come soon enough. Says the person who missed 14 weeks of school this year.

Aside from work, we do have a lot in limbo right now too. And when all is said and done, I just want to lay down with my sweet little baby and snuggle together.

Okay, quick update on workouts, or lack there of.

I worked out twice in the last two weeks. Yup, that’s it.

The week I was sick I did get a swim in. Thursday of that week was our annual wellness day at school. Kids get a half day and teachers get time at the end of the day to do some sort of health and wellness activity. For the second year in a row I signed up for lap swimming. I got in a 2100 yard workout that included kick drills and one 500 yard interval just to make sure I’m getting my endurance up. It felt great and I averaged 1:57/100 for my pace, which I was happy with.

The high school pool offers open swim to teachers in the early morning hours, so my plan is to start going to that once or twice a week. I’ll go swim, then shower at the high school and walk next door to the middle school for work for the day. It’s really the most convenient way I’ll be able to get in swims until I’m on summer break. Which days I go and how many times I go will be purely dictated by Ellie’s wake up schedule in the mornings. Days she wakes up, eats, and goes back down sometime in the 4am hour will be perfect for me to get out the door and go to get to the pool. So that’s what it’s going to be.

This week I ran once. I got Ellie out in the stroller and we did a “quick” 1.75 mile weave around the block, averaging an 11:45/mile pace. Splits were 11:55 and 11:28 respectively. I doubt I could have carried that pace more than two miles with the stroller. That’s the same pace I did 4 miles solo in a couple of weeks ago. It was a decent run. I really enjoy using the stroller and plan to use it all the time!

But yeah, that was it for the last two weeks. It’s pretty crummy, but life definitely sucked me in.

This week, being off work, I’m hoping to do more. I’d like to run today with the stroller, then do a five miler solo on Wednesday because the weather is going to be ah-mazing. Plus I really need to get on my bike a couple of times. I don’t foresee a swim happening this week, but that’s okay.

At this point, it’s all mental for me. I start official Ironman training next week, so it’s easy for me to miss workouts right now because I’m not “training” so to speak. I need to shake that though. Starting next week there aren’t any more excuses. I need to be in my basement running and riding, I need to be in the pool at school at 5:30am a couple of times a week. I need to put my head down and get to work.

The weather for tomorrow looks crummy, but hopefully I can get myself out the door anyways. Otherwise I’m going to have to go on a spider killing spree so I can use my treadmill again.

Time to use this week to get my head back in the game. Go time!

What was your best workout this week?

What do you do to get yourself motivated again?

  1. I think it’s awesome that the high school will let you swim in the mornings! I am currently trying to figure out how to fit swimming into my mornings – my current plan of going at 7:00 pm for lap swim means that little kids swim in my lane and get in my way. They take over the entire pool which is pretty shitty of their parents (who are all hanging out in the hot tub) and really stresses me out and throws me off! But if I swim in the mornings they won’t be there 🙂

  2. I’m sorry to hear your job is so stressful. What part of your job do you struggle with the most. I’ve never taught in that type of environment (only college) so I’m curious what tends to be the most stressful part of the job.

You’ll bounce back once things settle. Being sick is never fun and it definitely takes away from training. But once you are all recovered, you will feel recharged and motivated. You’ve got this!

    1. Right now, the politics surrounding public education are causing most of my stress. I love teaching but public education is fraught with politics that make it so difficult sometimes. It’s awful.

I hope I can get some motivation back. It’s been lacking lately for sure.
