Time Closes In

Today is Monday. It is my last Monday home. It’s my last week of maternity leave and I’m definitely feeling the squeeze. It’s so bittersweet. I am ready to see my co-workers and students, get back to some semblance of normalcy. But the idea of leaving Ellie all day is really weighing on me. The good news is she’ll be home with Husband all day since he works evenings. And he is such an amazing father, I don’t doubt he’ll do great being home alone with her all day. But I am sad to miss seeing my little girl all day, see her smile and grow and play. I don’t want to miss anything.

I am anxious about going back to work too. I know I’ll get right back into the swing of things, but it still feels so weird to go back. It’s different than going back after summer break because I’m walking in half way through the school year. I really hope I can settle in easily and quickly.

Okay, update time.

I only got in three workouts this week. Monday I ran two miles plus a short warm up and cool down. I tried to push my pace a little and go for some sub-12 minute miles. As much as I’m trying to regain my endurance, I’m also trying to get back a little speed. I know it will come, but I really want to start seeing some improvements there.

Tuesday I missed my bike workout because I was in Syracuse, which is okay. I did run again Wednesday and got in my 3.5 mile “long” run.  It was difficult but not as hard as it could have been. I’m pretty happy with how easily I seem to be bouncing back and able to increase my workouts.

Thursday I did finally get on my bike. I did a 7 minute warm up then powered through 26 minutes hard. I’m just trying to increase my cycling stamina since it’s pretty low right now. I’ve always been a runner and able to jump back into that easily enough, but cycling seems to not be as forgiving for me. Once I do gain my strength there I am a solid cyclist, but it’s the getting there that’s difficult. I did see an average power for those 26 minutes at 129.5 watts, so I’m going a little longer and getting a little more powerful. I know I’ll get there.

The weekend was a lot of family time for the three of us, as well as errands and such. But it was nice to spend some good, quality time with Rob and Ellie.

This week I’m planning to try and get in five workouts and make the most of having the opportunity to do them while I have Rob to watch Ellie. I really need to get in both my bike days and I’m hoping to get in a “long” run for 4 miles.

Here’s to hoping I can get in some quality workouts and some quality family time. Cheers!

What was your best workout this week?

  1. It’s a bummer that your biking strength doesn’t appear to be bouncing back as quickly as you’d like. I guess on the upside, at least running is coming back easily instead of both of them being a struggle!

Best workout this week was an 8 mile run on Saturday. The weather was perfect and I was feeling great so I mixed in a couple of fast miles to make it interesting.

I am glad my running is going well. The biking will get better. Great job on the 8 miler! I wish I had been able to get outside for a run this past weekend. It was so beautiful!

  2. You are SO lucky to be able to leave her in her own surroundings with her dad! I had to find child care at 6 weeks and it was a nightmare! My daughter had feeding issues (choked quite a bit) and no one “wanted” to feed her…hardest thing I ever did! You sound as if you are “in a groove”…keep it up!

I can’t imagine having to find childcare for a baby that young! Kudos to you for being such a strong mom.

  3. The first few weeks are the hardest back to work but then you find a “new normal” and adjust!! Good luck lady!

Thanks, friend! By the way, I read Ellie the book you sent us when we got home from the hospital 🙂

  4. Great job getting back to your workouts! And good luck going back to class. I’m sure your students will be so excited to have you back!
