Tri Talk Tuesday – Swim Gear and Gadgets

Hello, hello, hello!

It’s Tuesday again. Where the heck does the week keep going!? As per usual I am all linked up with Cynthia from You Signed Up For What and Miranda from The Cupcake Triathlete for another fun filled, triathlon banter filled post.

Tri-Talk-Tuesday (1)

Today we’re back on that swimming topic again. And today we’re talking mostly about all those fun toys and gear you can choose to use to make swimming more enjoyable and really tap into a great workout. I have a pretty solid amount of swim stuff that I swear by. So, what’s in my bag of swimming tricks?

1. TYR Complete Swim Kit– This a a package deal of all top of the line TYR swim toys which includes a kickboard, Hand Mentor Paddles, Crossblade Training Fins, a pull buoy, and a nice, oversized mesh bag for all of it to go into. Click the link for a full review on the whole kit and all the individual pieces. My friends at sent me this last year to review and it’s probably one of my most used pieces of training equipment I own. I never go to the pool without my TYR bag of goodies.

2. Garmin 310XT–  Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, it’s no 910XT. Some of us can’t afford the $500 upgraded version of Garmin’s tri specific watch. The 310XT may not track all my swim data, but I wear it in the water religiously none the less. I lap it every 50 yards when using it in the pool and after my workout uploads to Garmin Connect I just change the workout mode to “lap swimming” and put in my pool size and it gives me my pace/100 and all my 50 yard splits. Plenty of data for me to track my swim sets and speed and figure out what I can do be more efficient in the water. That’s all I need.

3. Blue Seventy Helix– Because where I live the winters are rough. Like -35F wind chills and day time highs barely cracking out of the negative temperatures, record breaking amounts of snow kind of rough. In order to get in OWS practice before mid summer a wetsuit is a must. I just got my Helix a few months ago and have been practicing in it. I wore it at IM Syracuse last week and was very pleased with it.

4. Audio Flood waterproof ipod shuffle– This thing freaking rocks! And seriously, come back over here tomorrow because I’ll be posting not only a full product review, but I have a second one to give away for free!!! So make sure you swing back over here to TGC tomorrow to read up about how totally cool this puppy is and to enter for a chance to win your own. It has revolutionized pool swimming for me.

In other news, this happened to me this morning.

Didn’t get a single lap in. Thankfully it happened now and not last weekend during my race. Looks like new AquaSphere Kayenne goggles just got added to my list, ugh.

What awesome gear and gadgets do you swim with?
Suggestions for a new pair of goggles? What do you wear?

  1. Hey Courtney! I wear the Aqua Sphere Kaiman goggles and I have had relatively good luck with them over the years. I have tried different brands and have come back to them. You mentioned the waterproof ipod…I have one and YES IT ROCKS!!! It is the best thing ever to help pass the time for pool swims. I have had mine about a 1 1/2 years and NEVER had any problems until a few weeks ago when it would no longer charge (and power on). I have tried all sorts of things and resetting it the the factory setting helped once. Since then…nadda. I have been so upset without my favorite pool toy! I will definitely check out your give away tomorrow!!!

    1. Oh, good to hear they last so long! That makes me super happy knowing they have a long life span.

  2. Love my aquasphere goggles! I can’t believe yours broke like that.. bummer! But it’s a good excuse to get new ones. I love your list, and I agree with a lot of it… my list is going to look very similar on my blog:) I really like using swim tools like buoys, paddles, fins, etc!

    1. It was such a bummer! I’m so sad and had to use my crummy Speedo’s this morning instead.

  3. I have always thought about listening to music in the water! I really get bored and find myself wanting to cut my swim short because of it. I really do think that music would help – does it really work well? I need to get myself one of the swim bundles instead of using the “community” equipment at the pool. Once again, I think the more I invest into the sport, the more it will motivate me to become better.

    1. Music definitely helps! I also get bored and have to fight myself not to cut workouts short. And yeah, ack, community stuff skeeves me out a bit, haha. Investing in the sport as much as I have definitely makes me want to keep training and racing!
